What it is

F lashbulb is a real-time media intelligence platform built by Stephen Taylor and used exclusively by Shift Media. It monitors traditional media — television, radio, print — and non-social digital sources across the Canadian and American media landscape, plus dozens of Canadian legislatures at every level of government. Custom-built capture hardware feeds a cloud pipeline that delivers real-time alerts, AI-powered narrative tracking, semantic search, and automated reporting. Flashbulb exists because existing media monitoring tools were too slow, too narrow in coverage, and built around outdated approaches to content analysis.

What I did

  • Designed and manufactured custom capture hardware — printed circuit boards, surface mount soldering, signal processing — with dozens of devices currently deployed
  • Built a real-time ingest pipeline from hardware to cloud to client, with alerts arriving within minutes of a word being spoken
  • Built legislative monitoring covering dozens of Canadian jurisdictions — federal, provincial, territorial, and municipal — with searchable archives and real-time alerts
  • Implemented semantic search across all media types, enabling natural-language queries that find conceptually related coverage across sources simultaneously
  • Built an AI agent that provides conversational media intelligence — natural language search, AI-generated summaries, narrative tracking, trend detection, and timeline visualization
  • Built automated report generation with AI-generated executive summaries and presentation export
  • Built real-time alerting delivered through instant alert channels with AI-generated context summaries
  • Provides clients the ability to react with rich media while the national and regional press — and the public — are focused on the moment
